How we work this out
- A bigger heater doesn't always cost more to run. Electric heaters turn virtually all the electricity they use into heat, so keeping the same room at the same temperature uses the same energy whichever suitable model you choose. A higher output just gets there faster, and the thermostat then switches it off more often. What changes your bill is whether the heater is big enough for the room, how long you use it, and what you pay per unit.
- Typical cost estimates the heat your room needs each hour (room size × insulation, scaled by how cold each month is) and caps it at the heater's output. A heater that is too small for the room is flagged, because it will run flat out and may not reach a comfortable temperature.
- Worst case assumes the heater runs at full power for every heated hour. Heaters without a thermostat, such as our halogen heaters, always run at full power while switched on, so for those the typical and worst-case figures are the same.
- This is an estimate. Real costs vary with outdoor temperature, your thermostat setting, doors and windows being opened, and the heater's controls. Standing charges are excluded as you pay them regardless.
- Electricity price: the default is the Ofgem price cap unit rate for 1 October to 31 December 2026. VAT on domestic electricity is 0% until 31 March 2027, and the cap is reviewed again for January, so type in your own tariff's rate for a closer figure.
